We joined a U.N. tour. All of us were very interested in the United Nations. We were surprised to hear the U.N. headquarters is located in an international territory, not an American territory. During the tour, a meeting was being held. We were excited about visiting the place where people gather from around the world to discuss peace. The tour was great although we were struggling with drowsiness after a long flight.
In the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we saw European armor, swords and so on. Some Japanese weapons were also there (in spite of the museum's name "Art.")
In the American Museum of Natural History, there were many kinds of exhibits such as dinosaur fossils, stuffed animals and the famous "Moai" that was featured in the movie "Night at the Museum."
This is the Statue of Liberty. I've seen it in books and on TV many times, but that was the first time I saw the real thing. It was marvelous! Well, there was one thing I couldn't deal with... The Liberty Island was too cold! I couldn't get out of the gift shop most of the time (lol).
While touring around Columbia University, I came to want to study there. In the gift shop, I bought some notebooks, hoping they would remind me of my resolution to study even harder. (It seems to be working so far.)
I was impressed that ERHS provides its students and teachers a better educational environment such as learning facilities than my school. Their classrooms are wider than ours. The inside of the school looked like a maze because of its large size. (It made me want to play tag. (lol)) Classes were also interesting, especially JROTC, which teaches discipline. I saw the students in uniform walk in precession. They looked very cooool.
There were so many people at the welcoming assembly. I was happy that so many people welcomed us. When I spoke in front of them, I was thrilled and thought, "This is a wonderful experience. I will never forget about this!" The next day I was glad that some of my American friends said, "Your speech was great!" I appreciate this opportunity and ERHS students who welcomed us. I can't express my gratitude in words. It was also great that my American friends sang the Japanese national anthem at the assembly. I was proud of them.
We had a pizza party. We, well… surely enough, ate pizza. We enjoyed talking with American students there. The pizza party was one of my favorite events. My advice: Join it with an empty stomach!
We enjoyed joining a music class. We sang "We Are The World" together with American students. The Japanese students sang "Kimiwonosete." The class made us feel "We Are The High School Students" wherever we are.
We joined the home economics class, and cooked blueberry pancakes, scrambled egg and cheese potato. I added a CUP of sour cream to beaten egg though I was supposed to add one spoonful! I cooked it again. It was successful in the end. (I had sweated a lot.) There were no chopsticks. I realized how useful chopsticks are when I had none.
I had a very exciting time visiting many places in Washington, D.C. The most exciting thing there was the "Simulator Ride" in one of the Smithsonian museums. I experienced a simulated combat scene. The seat moved wildly, and sometimes it got upside down. I had never played such a simulator before.
Everything was delicious at our potluck dinner! I made a lot of rice balls with my host family. It was a really nice Sunday evening.
Before my presentation, I was afraid that I might stumble a lot. However, it turned out to be great. I even answered some questions from some American students. That made me extreeeemly proud! I felt a sense of accomplishment after my presentation. Now (when everything is over…) I can say the key to a good presentation is good preparation.
Fort McHenry is the birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner, the American national anthem. There the American and Japanese students joined a "ceremony" of spreading a big American flag in its original design. It made us feel united even more strongly.
ERHS students showed us many kinds of American games! The games served as an icebreaker.
Through our homestay, we experienced something we could not through ordinary sightseeing, such as American lifestyles and going to church. We were amazed at our cultural differences.
I was impressed to see my host reading manga and watching Japanese videos in Japanese. I found that manga and anime are useful to introduce the Japanese culture to the world. Some people knew about Japan very well. I was amazed that one person I met had climbed Mt. Fuji. (I have never climbed it…) Everyone was very kind and spoke to me a lot. I learned what is important is to try something I have never done before. I had a great time at ERHS. I hope to see my American friends again!
Actually, I was nervous at first because my English was not good. However, it was not a problem. We stayed up late and talked about Japan, America, our school life, our love stories and so on. I also danced and sang with my host student's little sister. I felt like I became a member of the family. I keep in touch with them to date. Now they are my second family!!
I experienced a lot of things during my homestay. One of the most interesting experiences is going to church. It was quite different from what I had imagined. Days with Joshua, my host student, was the greatest in my life. I hope our friendship will last forever.
I had prepared my farewell speech, but I changed it completely. I could hardly express in words how much fun I had and how much I love my American friends. Although it was sad to say goodbye, we were glad we made such nice friends, and promised to keep in touch. See you in Japan!
